Visiting Mystery Castle at South Mountain

Phoenix Mystery House

South Mountain Mystery Castle View

Not really a castle, but a very odd and cool house built in the early 1940's that sits on South Mountain. It has a beautiful view of Phoenix. If you like to tour old homes or historic type buildings this is an interesting house to tour. The land was free at the time, and Boyce Gulley built this house himself out of stone, old car parts, etc. Neither his wife nor daughter knew that the house existed until after his death.

His daughter lives there now and is generally there to greet you when you arrive. She is very nice and has a special liking of cats (already I like her!) as can be seen by her many painted rocks and cat themed decorations.
The house is filled with oddities and imaginative ways to use discarded items. I am especially fond of the room with the saguaro cactus designed using river rock on the floor. Beautiful work!

And not to mention what a view of the city this house has!
