Phoenix Zoo
|
The Phoenix Zoo, is located in Papago Park next to the Botanical Gardens. It is one of the largest privately owned, nonprofit zoos, which basically means that the Zoo is totally supported by donors, private organizations and visitors to the zoo. They recieve no government funding. The Zoo houses 1300+ animals that are housed over 125 acres. We have found that the best time to visit is early in the day, often you will see the animals eating and they are more likely to be active during this time of day. The later in the day it is you'll notice, just like people, they like to nap and seek shade from the heat. Baby animals are always a hit, so it is always a good idea to check out the Zoo's website to see if there are any little ones and be sure to see them while visiting the zoo. A big hit with the kids is the "Enchanted Forest" play area, which is a large treehouse with a tiny stream running underneath it. Our kids could spend hours just playing in here. Another great play area is the Yakura Caverns, which is a cave with a slide and in a splash pad in the summer. The Phoenix Zoo has several seasonal events each year "Boo at the Zoo" and "Zoolights" being the most popular.
