Photos of Attractions in Houston, Texas
Houston is the 4th Largest City in the USA-It sprawls north, south, east and west. From wetland to prairie to forest. Houston has all of these just don't expect to see hills or mountains around here. Houston is probably best known for oil and the space center, but it also has a good museum district, nice parks (herman park is great) and you don't have to drive that far to feel like you are in the country, although like most areas the countryside is dotted with urban sprawl. Houston has no seasons to speak of-Summers are long hot and humid-October is still hot here. Think sub tropical and big bugs. The most irritating being the mosquitoes and fire ants. And spiders there is nothing like walking into a spider web-Yuck! There are also a lot of butterflies during the day here, dragonflies, and geckos. It is very green here thanks to the constant humidity. We lived here for one year due to a job. Although Houston is a big city, it really doesn't feel as big as others-people here are very friendly and wave a lot.
Why visit here? I really don't consider Houston a tourist destination, I believe most people travel here on business. But if you are in the area-Houston does have many places to discover and the people here are truly friendly. I know people say that about all kinds of states, but honestly the people in Houston have been genuinely kind people and the nicest neighbors we've had. We will remember them always~ Not really a tourist destination to me, but there are lots of jobs, and high humidity that last year round. Although I don't think it is the humidity that gets to you it is high dewpoint.
Houston Zoo The Houston Zoo is located in Hermann Park . This is my favorite park in Houston area. Not only does it house the zoo, has beautiful water fountains, train ride for the kids, playground and Japanese Tea Garden. The Zoo is a relatively inexpensive trip (at least compared to other zoos we have been to) and the kids always love the zoo!

Hermann Memorial Park Favorite park in the Houston area. Near the medical center, museums, houses the pretty Japanese Tea garden, take a train ride around the park with the kids. Play at the playground, picnic under great big shade trees, go for a jog, let the kids run through the water fountains on a hot day. Beautiful park in Houston.

Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo A HUGE event in Houston that goes on for a few weeks. Usually mid feb-mid march. Defenitely something to see especially if you've never been to one of these events. Bull riding, cattle roping, horse show, food, music and fun for the whole family. I had no idea the money to be made on roping a calf in 7 seconds. We had box seats (from the company) and a great view of the event. The kids went to see the Livestock show earlier in the day, the pictures are from that event. I wish I had brought the camera when we went to see the Rodeo. Overall it was a fun event to see- and if you are looking for a good "Texan" vacation experience this is a great event to find it at! Houston Children's Museum
Oil Ranch This is a fun spot to take the kids-fun in the country. Milk a cow, feed the cows, pony rides, petting zoo, pumpkins in the fall, swimming, etc Dewberry Farm “Every child should have mud pies, grasshoppers water bugs, tadpoles frogs and mud turtles elderberries, wild strawberries, acorns, chestnuts, trees to climb, brooks to wade in, water lilies, woodchucks, bats, bees, betterflies, various animals to pet, hayfields, pine-cones, rocks to roll, sand, snakes, huckleberries and hornets; and any child who has been deprived of these has been deprived of the best part of his education” Luther Burbank famous horticulturist. This is what Dewberry is all about! The kids loved it- and they had fun finding the perfect pumpkin in the pumpkin patch.

Texas Blue Bonnets Blue Bonnets in bloom in Texas (springtime) are beautiful and a great photo opp. They are the Texas state flower and grow wild just about everywhere. Drive out to the countryside to get your picture in. You don't have to drive that far to find a spot. I took pictures in Spring,tx just north of Houston.
Visit the Ocean Drive down 288 until you can't go anymore, through Freeport,TX there is a lovely spot of raw ocean beach. The road ends and while you drive out onto the sand it almost looks like you are driving straight into the ocean for a moment. Park and have fun away from all the tourists! Our kids have a blast here-hardly anyone around and who knew you could drive right up next to the ocean. There was a semi cab parked next to us. I have been to every ocean in the US and have never seen this, but on the other hand it is not crowded with people here and the water is warm even in October. It was fun. The Woodlands, Texas just north of the city is a pretty cool planned community with an upscale Town Center full of shopping.
Dallas Blooms Botanical Garden This is a wonderful botanical Garden. If you love flowers-visit her in the Spring Mid March to Mid April for the Dallas Blooms event. It is beautiful-who knew they could grow so many Tulips in Texas? Tulips,Tons of azaleas, and tons of other beautiful flowers, trees and landscape. They have a wonderful view of the lake-great for a picnic, beautiful water fountains, negative edge pond, and they have a small "Old Town" buildings for kids to play in, a garden area kids can water, etc. It was a great day of fun in a gorgeous surroundings.
